Mortgage Education Considerations Beyond the Mortgage Green but not Granola Presented by Dianna Dixon Our new home is equipped with central air but when I turn it on the air smells stale and unhealthy. The kids are constantly sneezing. Air conditioning and heating ducts require regular maintenance – the house ducts are probably dirty and perhaps even moldy. While regular duct cleanings are recommended, the “Ductworx” air purifier is installed directly into the ducts, purifying constantly, whatever the season, guarding against mold and germs being spread throughout the home. The basement of my new home has a mildewy smell – and I think I can see mold on the walls! Water damage can happen to any home – sometimes more than once. The visible mold must first be removed from the walls; to cope with the smell air purification can be recommended. For the rare flood, a single use of the “Blaster”, a commercial-grade air purifier, in the basement will be sufficient. If flooding is a continuing problem, consider regular use of the “Fresh Air”, a residential air purifier that will cope with the smell and airborne mold spores, preventing further flood damage. All I need to make my new home perfect is a coat of paint and new carpeting, but I’m worried about the “new smell” bothering the baby. Paint and carpeting are quick ways to improve the look of any home; careful choices of paint and carpeting preserve the health of the inhabitants and the environment. Babies are particularly sensitive to the chemical emissions from standard paints, carpeting and furnishings. Consider choosing non-toxic, low-emission, environmentally-friendly decorating products for the home – ask me how! We bought a new place so my mother-in-law could move in with us – but she smokes! Cigarette smoke – first-hand or second-hand – is unhealthy. Keep the peace by installing “Fresh Air”, a whole-home air purification system that eliminates both the smoke and smell of cigarettes. User-friendly and highly adjustable, the Fresh Air cleans the air for smoker and breather alike. Our newly-purchased home needs lots of TLC, both renovation and redecoration. I want to do this right, with eco-sustainable building materials and furnishings to support the well-being of my family. Where do I start? Many earth-friendly, people-friendly building and decorating products now exist, making beautiful, low-toxicity renovations easier than ever. For smaller jobs, look into the “green” paints put out by the major paint manufacturers such as Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. Consider all-wool or recycled carpeting and low-emissions upholstery. For a more ambitious project, speak to me about my “green team” – general contractors and interior designers enthusiastic about beautiful and eco-friendly home renovation and redecoration. The water report for my new neighborhood concerns me. How do I improve water quality in my home? We often think first of the kitchen faucet, source of water for cooking and drinking. The “Living Water” water purification system is available for the kitchen faucet, for water from public supplies or well water. More than just a water filter, Living Water cleans and purifies the drinking and cooking water at the kitchen sink. Of course, contaminants come in through the bathroom faucet and shower head as well. Consider the whole-home water purification system “Spring House” to eliminate chlorine and other water-borne pollutants at every faucet. |
