What To Do Before You Move

TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF MOVING:

Put together your team. You’ll need some support during this stressful time!  Some people you might need are: a good mover, a packer, a good real estate agent if you are selling your house, and a professional organizer. You can also get help from friends and family, but be sure to use them appropriately.

Start a moving folder to keep track of estimates, schedules, and receipts.  Designate a spot to keep the folder so you’ll always know where it is.

Investigate moving companies and get estimates.

Declutter your home. A good rule is to keep only the things you actually use or love.  Your house will show better and sell faster if it’s uncluttered, and you won’t waste time and money moving things you don’t want.  This is a time-consuming task that is usually easier with support from a friend or a professional organizer.

Take unwanted things to a charity, sell them online, or arrange a yard sale.  Yard sales work best if you: 1.) live on a busy street and 2.) have large items to sell.

When taking things to a charity, be sure to get the receipts for tax purposes.  Those old clothes and household items can add up to more than you might think.
